Top 5 Eco-Friendly Business Tips for Sustainable Success

If you are a business owner, especially in real estate, you might have wondered how being environmentally friendly affects your company. It is important for owners to know that they need to take a few key steps to minimize their small business's carbon footprint and go green. This is why I have broken down five tips to make your venture more sustainable.

How To Run An Eco-Friendly Business

Adopting sustainable business practices can greatly benefit both the environment and your financial performance. As a small business owner in Toronto, I have found that although there are certain disadvantages, going green ensures sustainability and also gives you a better chance at long-term success. Here are a few effective strategies that you can implement today.

Going Digital for a Sustainable Eco-Friendly Business

Modernising your firm by going digital can actually be much more effective in promoting sustainable business practices. Digital marketing and content creation on platforms like Instagram, Facebook ads, and YouTube don’t use additional resources besides computers. You can cut the print cost while also minimising the environmental impact and the amount of paper waste you create.

Digital prints also allow you to be more specific and tailored to who receives them, rather than just sending them to an area code.

If you have to print, print a minimal amount and use recycled paper.

Environmentally Friendly Business Travel Practices

Reducing travel is something that came up a lot during the pandemic. We learned that in-person meetings and professional trips are not as necessary as we thought.

There are many environmentally friendly ways to have meetings without travelling, such as Zoom calls or connecting using Slack.

There are also many ways to reduce your travel. Try riding a bike once in a while. If you have a lot of gear with you, try electric vehicles instead.

Minimising E-Waste for Eco-Friendly Business

When you are thinking of environmentally friendly business ideas, like buying new technology, I suggest you do your research thoroughly beforehand. Constantly buying new technology is very wasteful.

If you use technology that uses batteries, try to buy tech with long-lasting batteries instead. When you are done with the batteries, dispose of them correctly. Many places will take them, such as Sonic Boom on Spadina. I also recommend switching to reusable batteries. This way, you can save a little bit of money and use less.

Building Green Business Partnerships

Aligning with other corporations and organisations dedicated to sustainability can reinforce your company's values and objectives. By working together, you can create innovative solutions, such as eco-friendly packaging for small businesses

These green partnerships can also improve your brand's reputation among consumers. I have found that working with other green companies in Niagara and Toronto has helped to boost our visibility with the right clientele. Partnering with sustainable businesses also helps cultivate a healthier environment and broadens your industry connections.

Creating an Eco-Friendly Office Environment

There are many ways you can reduce your office's carbon footprint.

  • One easy thing to do is turn off lights when you leave a room and shut down computers when you are not using them.

  • Also, try simple things like managing your cooling and heating. Look at natural ways of cooling space, such as keeping windows closed and blinds open or closed for natural lighting. Make sure that your office also uses eco-friendly cleaning products for business.

  • Another easy way to limit waste is to recycle when possible and provide employees with branded reusable cups and mugs.
